Panelists:

Janet Brown – Public Opinion Pollster

With over 25 years of experience in polling and market research, Janet Brown has developed a knack for asking the right people the right questions.

Throughout her career, Janet has managed research assignments for all levels of government and numerous private sector organizations. Based in Calgary, she specializes in designing research projects that give clients a clear understanding of the audiences and stakeholders they want to influence.

Janet publishes "Wild Ride", a quarterly report which tracks public opinion in Alberta, and Alberta’s rapidly evolving provincial scene. She is often invited to speak about political and social trends, and is a regular commentator on the CBC Calgary News at Six, Alberta Primetime on CTV2 in Alberta, and The Weekend Morning News on Global News Calgary.

She is co-author of a chapter in "Orange Chinook: Politics in the New Alberta", which was released by the University of Calgary Press on January 31, 2019. Janet's chapter is titled "Marginally Better", and it analyses the publicly released polling from the 2015 Alberta election.

Janet led a large scale public opinion research project for CBC Calgary in Spring 2018, as part of their series "Calgary: The Road Ahead". This research went beyond the "horse race" numbers to identify the underlying dynamics that are driving public opinion in Alberta ahead of the 2019 provincial election.

Janet continues to be active in the academic community, and has recently delivered guest lectures at the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University, and Concordia University in Montreal.

Emma Graney – Provincial Affairs Reporter, Edmonton Journal and Sun

Based out of the Alberta legislature press gallery, Emma Graney is provincial affairs reporter for the Edmonton Journal and Sun. She is also host of long-running weekly Alberta politics podcast, The Press Gallery.

Emma landed in Edmonton in 2016. Just in case her accent isn’t a dead giveaway, she’s an Aussie expat transplanted to Alberta following stints in British Columbia, Newfoundland and Saskatchewan. A Canadian citizen since 2017, she is now almost impossible to deport.

Emma’s journalism career began at a daily newspaper in Northern NSW, Australia, where her habit of jumping head-first into stories led to her hiking 100 kilometres through mountainous jungle in Papua New Guinea, selling a raffle ticket to then-prime minister John Howard and being crowned 2004 Jacaranda Holiday Princess (it’s a long story).

After relocating to Canada 12 years ago, Emma has crossed the country. She has worked at Legal Aid in Vancouver, was the first female editor of the Northern Pen newspaper in St. Anthony, Newfoundland, and covered Saskatchewan politics for the Regina Leader-Post. Picking up a bevy of journalism awards along the way, she now covers the daily rollercoaster of Alberta politics and in 2018 was awarded one of three Asia Pacific Foundation media fellowships in Canada to investigate artificial intelligence in China.

You can find her on twitter @EmmaLGraney, where she’s probably posting GIFs of cute animals.
