MEET THE COMMITTEE - BARRY LAPPIN
The GPS Technical Conference Call for Abstracts is open for submissions! We caught up with Technical Committee members to dive into what abstracts they will be reviewing, what their experience is and what trends they're noticing in the global energy landscape.
This week we caught up with returning committee member Barry Lappin, a Senior Business Development Advisor at Petrospec Engineering.
GPS: What is your specialty? What abstracts will you be reviewing?
BL: The abstracts I plan to review include Drilling & Completion, Enhanced Oil Recovery and Field Development & Infrastructure. My specialties are in downhole equipment including instrumentation and coil tubing operations (temperature & pressure surveys, sand cleanouts) as well as EOR technologies. I have been involved in the unconventional oil industry for 20 years with the last 5 years with Petrospec Engineering in Calgary.
GPS: What are some projects you’ve worked on?
BL: I have worked on a number of EOR projects both in Canada and other parts of the world including Latin America, Russia, Oman, Africa, China. Most recently I have been involved with downhole electric heating, fiber optic and coil tubing sand cleanout projects.
GPS: What trends are you noticing in global energy?
BL: I’ve noticed a focus on reduction of operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions. New technologies, some pioneered in Canada have allowed operators to achieve these reductions opening up new resources previously thought to be unsustainable.
GPS: What attracted you to working in energy?
BL: I like that the energy industry is so dynamic with technology and innovation playing such important roles.
GPS: What do you like to do in your free time?
BL: I like travelling (with my awesome travel companion Connie), preferable somewhere with a great beach and good diving. I also enjoy hockey, golf and aviation.
