Clean Technology: Calgary Company Recycles Carbon Dioxide to Tackle Environmental Impact
As the 2018 GPS Emerging Clean Technology GPS Award Winner, CleanO2 Carbon Capture Products (CleanO2) and CEO and co-founder Jaeson Cardiff are taking the problem head on by creating value from waste. Their products reduce commercial energy consumption and carbon emissions coming from natural gas as an energy source.
The technology CARBiNX offers a solution that is unique to the market.
A portion of the flue gas, having CO2 concentrations of 40,000 ppm or greater pass through the CARBiNX reaction chamber. From there, chemicals react with CO2 in the flue steam to create carbon byproducts and water. Waste heat from the furnace and the chemical reaction is transferred to the domestic water supply and spent chemicals are recharged as required.
The CARBiNX directly reduces GHG emissions by 8 tonnes CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) per year:
- By capturing 2.8 tonnes per year of CO2 from flue exhaust gas.
- From heat recovery from the chemical reaction reduces natural gas demand for hot water heating, resulting in additional GHG reduction of 5.2 tonnes CO2e per year and an extended hot water heater lifecycle.
The technology started in the development stage in 2005, incorporated as a business in 2015 and has been pushing to commercialize ever since.
Recently, CleanO2 is in the process of sending out units to Centerpoint Energy in Minneapolis and have existing projects with FortisBC and ATCO Gas. These avenues along with the Canadian Gas Association and its affiliates are helping CleanO2 tell their story and get their technology into mechanical rooms across North America.
“Natural gas isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Everybody is looking for ways to reduce their current emissions while maintaining their current energy needs, so we’re a nice fit. When you combine the shift in politics with public awareness, it’s created a perfect storm for us,” said Cardiff.
In 2018, CleanO2 was the recipient of the Emerging Clean Technology Award at the GPS Awards Gala.
The Emerging Clean Technology Award is specific to non-renewable resources and is focused on innovative technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including CO2 and methane, in the energy industry.
“The GPS Award put us on the world stage. We received a lot of attention from property owners to industry players all around the world,” detailed Cardiff. “The interest is there and we’re hoping to move further into international markets in the coming years as a result of what started with the GPS awards.”
Nominated against industry giants Saudi Aramco and Atlantis Research Labs, CleanO2 didn’t expect to take home a win. As Cardiff explained, “It was a complete shock, not only that we were nominated, but that we won. It came out of nowhere.”
Anytime a company gets acknowledged from experts in the industry, it goes a long way.
“When we won, we had a moment of clarity. We won, this isn’t a little thing, this is the Global Petroleum Show. It’s an international massive event that we’ve been acknowledged at, and it pushed us to recognize that we were onto something… and we needed to keep pushing,” said Cardiff.
Since winning the award at GPS, CleanO2 has also been recognized as a Clean Technology Champion at the Energy Excellence Awards and was nominated at the 2019 Nature Inspiration Awards.
To help further research and development efforts, CleanO2 sells hand soap, liquid soap and car wash detergent containing recycled carbon dioxide derived from their technology CARBiNX in the commercial heating industry.
This is only one of the opportunities to be recognized at the GPS Awards. At GPS 2020, there will be more organizations, individuals and projects that will be in the spotlight of the esteemed audience.
