Meet the Committee - Terry Mandin

The GPS Technical Conference Call for Abstracts is now open! As professionals are submitting their abstracts, we caught up with Technical Committee members to dive into what abstracts they will be reviewing, what their experience is and what trends they're noticing in the global energy landscape.

To kick off this series, we caught up with returning committee member Terry Mandin, an Internet of Things (IoT) Architect at Microsoft.

GPS: What is your specialty? What abstracts will you be reviewing?

TM: I will be reviewing abstracts related to IoT, industrial devices and cloud computing.

GPS: What are some projects that you've worked on?

TM: I've worked on projects across a variety of IoT industries: energy, agriculture, construction, fleet management and fitness just to name a few. In the oil and gas industry, a recent project involved connecting industrial IoT devices to brownfield industrial equipment to ingest IoT data via OPC UA, and to perform anomaly detection on the edge.

GPS: What trends are you noticing in the global energy landscape?

TM: A common trend I see for energy customers is ingesting on-premise data from industrial systems (SCADA, historians) into the cloud. Customers then use cloud scale services to perform advanced analytics and build machine learning models on the data across multiple plants and facilities, and to provide real-time dashboards. Advanced machine learning models are now being pushed out to edge devices where they can interact with tight control loops with on-premise industrial equipment.

GPS: What attracted you to working in energy?

TM: It would be hard to find someone in Alberta that does not have at least one indirect connection to the energy industry. My career as led me to work with many local energy companies such as Spectra Energy, Talisman Energy and Husky Energy.

GPS: What do you like to do in your free time?

TM: I enjoy the outdoors, especially with activities such as skiing, hiking, biking and camping. Since it's fall now, I often head out with my dog Hank bird hunting. The photo above is a picture from one of our hunts. In case you can't tell, I'm the one wearing a hat. 😊
